About TheFinanceSection

TheFinanceSection publishes free money calculators and independent research on U.S. banks and credit unions. Our tools help you explore savings goals, emergency funds, inflation, and the financial institutions you use.

Our Mission

We believe consumers deserve clear, data-driven insights about the financial institutions they trust with their money. While banks spend millions on marketing, we focus on what the data actually says about their financial health, consumer complaints, and community investment.

How We Work

Our institution research draws on these public sources. Coverage and reporting periods vary; a missing figure or complaint match does not mean an institution has no risk or complaints.

  • FDIC BankFind Suite — Bank financial reports and institution records
  • NCUA Call Reports — Credit union financial reports
  • CFPB Consumer Complaint Database — Published complaint records for reviewed institution mappings and a complete rolling window; complaints are not findings of wrongdoing
  • FFIEC — Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) information

TFS computes its own financial health grades from available data. These are editorial assessments, not ratings assigned or endorsed by a regulator. Our grading methodology explains the inputs, weights, and limitations. An institution without sufficient data may not have a grade.

Publishing, sources, and corrections

TheFinanceSection is the publisher responsible for this site. Our automated data pipelines assemble institution records, and our calculator pages explain their formulas and assumptions. CD terms come from institution disclosures; amounts you enter into a tool are your own inputs. These sources are distinct from government data and from TFS's analysis.

Published articles display the author and reviewer when those details are supplied, along with publication and update dates. A publisher attribution does not imply an independent expert reviewed an article. We do not claim professional credentials for unnamed contributors.

To report an error, use the site contact details and include the page URL, the figure or statement in question, and a supporting source if available. Please leave out account numbers and other private financial details.

What We Are Not

TheFinanceSection is not a financial advisor. We do not provide financial advice, and our Health Grades are editorial assessments, not official government ratings. Always verify information directly with your financial institution before making financial decisions.
